Story Assignments
Date: Fri, 12 May 2000

Freelance posting

Terrain, an award-winning environmental quarterly published by the
Ecology Center, has the following story assignments available.

We cannot pay, but offer extensive editing guidance and outstanding
design for clips. Deadlines are June 1. Word counts listed below.
Where indicated, news stories could be turned into features with
additional work.

We would be happy to mail copies of the magazine on request.

Black family farmers
news: 600-700, could turn into a feature at 2000 words or more

The USDA is dragging its feet on making settlement payments after
black farmers filed a 1997 suit over discriminatory practices. Every
day, black family farmers lose 1,000 acres of land. They claim that
53 percent of USDA land holdings formerly belonged to them. To whom
are they losing their land? What are the ecological and social
consequences? How much of this happening in California? Are black-
owned farms traditionally more ecologically sound? Are things grown
there that aren't grown elsewhere - are we losing heirloom strains as
well as heirloom ways of life? What percentage of family farms is
owned by African Americans? What percentage of large corporate farms?

North Coast
news: 500-600 words

Direct action has begun in North Coast forests in response to a slew
of logging plans. A series of tree-sits, roadblocks, and chain-downs
has temporarily staved off helicopter and steep-slope logging by
Pacific Lumber and Mendocino Redwood Company. This story will update
Terrain's coverage of Summer 2000, page 10. It will also delineate
the extent of ecological damage. By one activist's account, the plans
could wipe out the last remaining genetic pools of wild salmon within
one year. Is this true? Which salmon, which watersheds? If the salmon
are about to go extinct, what else is on the brink? What less well-
known species may also disappear? Which timber harvests most threaten
wild salmon as a species? How soon might they be logged? Which
watersheds are most affected?

news: 400-500 words

The Canadian company Methanex has sued the state of California for
phasing out MTBE. The suit, filed under NAFTA rules, threatens $1
billion in damages. Is the ban going to be revoked because of the
suit? What's the status of the suit? Is the state attempting to reach
a settlement? When is this going to ruled on? Are there plans for a
countersuit, or a suit for water contamination?

Green Building
news: 600 words; could turn into a feature at 2000 words

Reportedly, a straw-bale house is being built within the city limits
of Concord CA. It this an important precedent? Alternative building
methods, including straw-bale, cob, and rammed earth, have
increasingly entered the mainstream of public knowledge, but to what
extent are they actually practiced? Is there a significant number of
such contructions in urban or suburban areas, or do most green
buildings remain experimental rural homesteads? Who is building these
structures? Who is retrofitting existing homes, and how are they
doing it? What are cities and counties doing, or failing to do, in
order to help along such efforts? Are construction rates increasing

We would want answer these questions in the context of news story
focusing especially on a successful project in Concord to build a
straw-bale home in the city itself.

We have contacts and some reporting already completed.

Airport Expansion
news: 600-up; could turn into a news feature at 2000 words

San Francisco Airport is planning a mammoth runway expansion that
would fill about 1,200 acres of the Bay. There is an attempt to
exempt the expansion from environmental impact report provisions,
which in itself would be a significant precedent. Project proponents
are trying to get around environmental concerns by proposing to buy
up and restore industrial salt ponds.

The Bayfill would have significant effects, changing circulation
patterns of Bay waters, creating eddies where sediment can build up.
That could transform open water into dry land. Oakland Airport is
also planning an expansion -- a bit less well-known. With these two
projects gobbling up the Bay, is there a threshhold beyond which a
chain reaction of ecological damage would result? How does all this
fit in with (or contradict) the grand Bay Wetlands plan? Could
evaporation ponds really become viable wetlands? How long would it

Globalization angle: Is this really to make flights more efficient
and cut back delays (is there a better way to improve efficiency?),
or is it simply to accommodate more international traffic, including
cargo traffic, without addressing delays?

news: 400-500 words

This story will present a challenge: Find something to say about SUVs
that hasn't been said before. Some questions are basic and
unavoidable: Are SUVs involved in more accidents than normal
vehicles? What happens to the normal vehicles they hit? How much
carbon dioxide is spewed annually by SUVs? How much more material
(metals mined and such) is used to make them? What would people be
buying if they weren't buying SUVs? But surprise us with a new angle.
